An exhibition celebrating and showcasing works by select Cleveland Arts Prize Visual Arts winners, featuring three of Dr. Hayashi's panoramic photo-collages spanning her Post-Industrial, Sacred Architectures, and Internment Camps series.
Exhibition Overview
“The CAP Show” celebrates and showcases the works of select Cleveland Arts Prize Visual Arts winners—accomplished artists who represent a wide range of mediums that portray the extraordinary creative excellence of our region and continue to influence Cleveland’s legacy in the arts.
Dr. Masumi Hayashi received the Cleveland Arts Prize for Visual Arts in 1994, recognizing her innovative panoramic photo-collage technique and significant contributions to documentary photography. This exhibition honors her legacy alongside 24 other distinguished CAP Visual Arts winners spanning from 1969 to 2025.
Featured Works
Three of Dr. Hayashi’s panoramic photo-collages are featured in this exhibition, representing the breadth of her artistic vision:
W. 25th Street Station, Cleveland, Ohio
From the Post-Industrial/City Works series
This striking panoramic documents Cleveland’s historic West Side Market area and the RTA rapid transit station, capturing the layered urban landscape that defined much of Hayashi’s Cleveland-based work. The image exemplifies her ability to transform familiar urban spaces into immersive visual experiences.
Angkor Wat, No. 1
From the Sacred Architectures series
Dr. Hayashi traveled extensively to document sacred sites across Asia and beyond. This panoramic of Cambodia’s iconic Angkor Wat temple complex demonstrates her masterful ability to capture the spiritual grandeur and architectural complexity of these ancient structures through her signature photo-collage technique.
Bay Farm Internment Camp, British Columbia
From the Japanese Canadian Internment Camps series
Extending her documentation beyond the United States, Hayashi also photographed the sites where Japanese Canadians were forcibly relocated during World War II. Bay Farm represents an important but lesser-known chapter of North American wartime injustice, giving visual testimony to experiences often overshadowed by the American internment narrative.
